Euchre scoring, point by point

Only five tricks are played, so the whole score turns on one question: did the makers reach three? Everything else is a bonus or a penalty on top of that answer.

Read that table twice before your next game. The two rows players get wrong most often are the lone hand that stops at four tricks, which scores 1 and not 4, and the euchred lone hand, which pays the defenders the ordinary 2.

Worked examples

Ordinary make

Makers take 3

North orders up hearts and the partnership wins three tricks. North and South score 1. The defenders score nothing; there is no consolation point in Euchre.

March

Makers take all 5

East names spades and East and West sweep the hand. They score 2. Had East declared a lone hand before the first lead, the same sweep would have scored 4.

Euchre

Makers take 2

South names clubs and takes only two tricks. South's team scores nothing and the defenders add 2. This is the only way the defending side scores at the default table.

Lone hand, partial

Lone maker takes 4

West goes alone and wins four of the five tricks. The score is 1, not 4. Going alone raises the reward for a sweep; it does not raise the ordinary make.

Why the loner is a real gamble

A lone maker plays three-card tricks without a partner's help, and the partner's cards cannot cover a weak suit. The reward doubles from 2 to 4 only on a sweep, while the penalty for finishing under three tricks is the same 2 points the defenders would collect anyway. That makes the loner a bet on five tricks, not a safer way to score one.

Counting the swing

With spades as trump, a hand holding both bowers plus the Ace of spades controls the top three trumps outright. The remaining question is the last two tricks, which usually means an off-suit Ace or a fourth trump. Without one of those, the likely outcome is a one-point make rather than the four-point sweep.

Match targets and the scoring options

Big Mike plays to 10 points by default and also supports 5 and 7, which Bicycle lists as the three targets a table may agree on in advance. A hand is always completed before the match ends; there is no mid-hand finish.

Super euchre is off by default

Pagat documents tables that pay the defenders 4 when the makers take no tricks at all. Big Mike offers that as a table option. With it switched off, a hand where the makers take zero tricks still scores the ordinary 2.

Keeping score with two spare cards

Stripping the deck to 24 cards leaves plenty of low cards unused, so many tables keep score with a pair of them instead of a pencil: one card laid across another so that only the intended number of pips stays visible. Pagat records several North American pairings for this, including a six with a four, two fives, and a two with a three.

The pair follows whatever target the table has already agreed rather than setting it. Tables playing the eleven-point British game commonly use a five and a six, and a fifteen-point game a seven and an eight.

Euchre scoring FAQ

How many points is a euchre worth?

Two points to the defending team. A euchre happens whenever the makers take fewer than three of the five tricks.

Do you get extra points for going alone and taking four tricks?

No. A lone maker scores 4 only for taking all five tricks. Three or four tricks scores the ordinary 1 point.

What is a march in Euchre?

Taking all five tricks. A partnership march scores 2 points; a lone march scores 4.

How many points do you play to in Euchre?

Big Mike Games plays to 10 by default. Bicycle documents 5, 7, or 10 points by prior agreement, and all three are available as table options.
